Nicolás Franco
Nicolas Franco was born in 1973, in Santiago, where he currently lives and works.
Fluidly moving between different styles and aesthetics, Nicolás Franco´s work has delve into the very nature of painting and photography, analyzing its components, its language and its history and often transcending the traditional boundaries of both mediums. His creations frequently play with ideas of representation, abstraction, process, pattern, visual distortions and optical illusions, inviting viewers to question their own sensory experience. Drawing from his experience as a Latin American artist, Franco’s work blends a diverse array of influences, incorporating references from different cultures, aesthetics, and histories. This fusion offers a wide range of layers of meaning and ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations and perspectives.
His work has been shown extensively internationally in institutions such as Tate Modern; Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich; The Centre of Contemporary, Torun; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima; Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Santiago; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago; Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, Santiago; Museo de Artes Visuales, Santiago; Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo, Badajoz; ; Parque Cultural de Valparaiso; Sala Alcalá 31 Madrid; Centro de Arte La Conservera, Murcia; , MUUA - Antioquia; among others. He participated in the First Chile Triennial and has been awarded funds from the Mondrian Foundation; Fundación Ama; Tecnopol UAH and Oxford University, Fondo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes and The Pollock - Krasner Foundation.
Nicolas Franco´s work is present in the collections of Tate Modern, Center of Contemporary Arts Torun (Poland); Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos de Santiago, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago; Museo de Artes Visuales de Santiago; Fundación AMA; Fundación Engel, Fundación Larivier, Il Posto, Fundación CASA, Fundación de Artes Visuales; Colección Eduardo Hochschild; Colección Celia Brirbaher, Bogota; and has been reviewed in The Financial Times, Wallpaper, ArtNexus and The Guardian. He has participated in several international art residencies such as De Ateliers and Gasworks.
